Our 3 Day Escape has become a favorite for those who are looking for a shorter but exciting river rafting adventure. Your Colorado River trip begins in Las Vegas, NV with a scenic flight to the Bar-10 Ranch on the Arizona Strip (north rim of the Grand Canyon). At the ranch to can go horseback riding, take an ATV tour, or just relax in the peaceful setting and take in the beautiful sights.

The next morning you will be helicoptered down to the Canyon floor where you will explore the lower section of the Canyon for the next day and a half. How (NOT What) To Pack for Your Arizona River Runners Raft Trip

When you make your reservation for a Grand Canyon raft trip with Arizona River Runners they will help you to get ready for your upcoming adventure. You can ask lots of questions and people (yes, live humans) will talk with you and make sure you understand things so that you can pack what you need.

I'm not going to address WHAT to pack right now but, instead, HOW to pack.

Here's the deal...you are coming from point A, maybe in a car, maybe on a plane, maybe with extra days before or after your Colorado River trip. That's all up to you. Let's focus here on your rafting needs. If you are flying to Las Vegas before your trip make sure you carry on your river duffel bag on the plane. DO NOT CHECK IT. It can be a real last minute challenge to find all your river gear if the airline happens to lose your bag.

ARR will provide you with 2 waterproof dry bags for your raft trip. One smaller dry bag (7" diameter x 14" deep), is for you to keep with you during the daytime. You will pack sunscreen, camera, rain gear...things that you will have access to all day long. Bring a couple of carabiners too. They make it easy to clip and un-clip your bag to the boat straps and to use in camp to keep your stuff together. The other larger dry bag will hold your duffel bag with everything else of yours, including all of your sleeping stuff, which Arizona River Runners provides. The large dry bag will be wrapped up and stowed away all day long. You will have access to this at camp each night.

You may leave home with other, major luggage pieces but when you head for the river......do yourself a favor. (1) Pack light, and (2) bring your personal things in a soft duffel kind of bag no larger than 24" x 12" x 12"(no rigid suitcases please). Just slide the whole thing into your dry bag and you're good to go. I've even seen people use black trash bags instead of luggage. It's not a bad way to go

One, final thought....on any trip that you FLY (not all raft trips do this but many do) back to where you started your Grand Canyon adventure, you will need ID. Just like any other air carrier, ID is required. So stash that with your duffel bag and it will be ready and waiting.

I was lucky enough to celebrate my 50th birthday on an Arizona River Runners raft trip in the Grand Canyon with a bunch of friends along with some new friends. Even though my birthday is not in the summer, my hubby and I decided we would try to get some friends to come along and we would celebrate my birthday on the river at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. So we picked the date for the whitewater raft trip and then sent out invitations. It was PYOW (you know...Pay Your Own Way). Some friends signed on, we invited a guitarist we met on a cruise and there you have it. It was a fabulous week in a spectacular place. It's great to go whitewater rafting through the Grand Canyon without a special occasion to celebrate, but with a week to toast my birthday it was an unprecedented joy.

I've celebrated others' anniversaries, birthdays and miscellaneous achievements at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. There have been specialty cakes baked in the Dutch oven or candles or some rousing round of toasts and songs to commemorate special days. One night after dinner, we were served an anniversary cake, warm from the Dutch oven. It was 2 layers of chocolate cake oozing raspberry preserves in the middle. There I was with warm, dark cake in my 2 cupped hands, thinking...how the heck do I actually eat this?

Most of Arizona River Runners' Grand Canyon raft trips involve a helicopter ride. If that worries you, rest assured that there are options without the helicopter.

"Into the Wild" of the Grand Canyon ~ Arizona River Runners

Have you seen the movie "Into the Wild" directed by Sean Penn? It came out a few years ago and is a true story about a young man that graduates from college, chooses to shirk his parental connections and expectations, and strike out to explore life. Part of his exploring takes place on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon which is quite entertaining.

Here's the really fun part. This kid meets an old hippy couple and travels with them for a while. The "old hippy guy" just happens to be a Grand Canyon/Flagstaff guy. He was initially working as support for the filming in the Grand Canyon and they realized he was perfect for the part of the hippy dude. So, they talked him into playing the part and he was actually very good. I doubt they had to put makeup on him or change his clothing because the part he plays is exactly the way he is in real life.....a genuine old hippy dude.....a real throwback to the 70's. He probably didn't even need any acting lessons or coaching for this part.

If you haven't seen "Into the Wild" definitely go rent it, stream it, etc. Even without knowing Brian Dierker personally, you will enjoy the movie. It's about life's choices and risks, and being present in your own existence.

There's a whole team of people that make it possible for you to go rafting in the Grand Canyon with Arizona River Runners. First, you call the office and talk to Shirley or Pam, Judy or Dick. Sometimes I'm in there but that's only when they are desperate. So, the office people help you make your reservation and they help you get prepared for your rafting trip. "Getting prepared" entails different things for most everybody. Some people need more guidance than others. Some people are real greenhorns as opposed to the veteran rafters that are returning for more of the good stuff.

When you actually get to the launch of the river trip you meet more of the team.....your guides and their helpers (swampers). Now you're looking at the first string....the A team. You and your crew.

But, other team members have worked in symphony to get everybody to this point. There are people that work in the warehouse and keep it stocked, clean and organized so that others can pack the rafts. Somebody de-rigs and/or unpacks the rafts. Others on the ARR team do mechanical stuff....they work on the motors or frames and the rest of the equipment to keep it running smoothly.

Drivers on the Arizona River Runners team keep us moving. ARR has two 18-wheeler rigs that transport rafts, crew members and equipment from the end of the trip back to the warehouse and then, when it's time, everything goes back to the launch site at Lee's Ferry.

Sleeping on Your Arizona River Runners Grand Canyon Rafting Trip

Are you an experienced camper? Have you ever slept in a sleeping bag before? Have you pitched a tent? Do you know what a rain fly is? Do you enjoy your pillow-top mattress at home?

Arizona River Runners’ guides will show you how to put up your tent, and that will also include the rain fly. No, you will not have a pillow-top mattress but ARR will provide you a sleeping bag, a pillow, a sheet and a cot. You will not be sleeping on the ground. Your cot will be your new friend. It serves as a couch (when you have friends over). It can also be a card table for....well....cards and other board games, wagering and gambling. Your cot offers you additional seating if you have guests visiting your campsite and...(drum roll please), it is the best seat in the house for viewing the night sky. Stretch out comfortably on your cot and gaze into the heavens. The stars will astound you. You can drift off to sleep under a starry, starry sky.

There are people rafting the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon right now. Right now and all winter long, there are all kinds of activities going on. Some trips are scientists doing research. Everything in, beside, beneath, over and around the river corridor gets studied. There are bald eagles, condors, humpback chub, trout, tamarisks, rocks and waters, just to name a few things that are studied and recorded. Some teams go down there during the winter season to build trails or to rebuild the ones that are already being used. The flora and fauna are worked on.

Some rafters are down there just for fun. It's an awesome environment to spend your fall and/or winter in.

The water temperature is pretty constant at 45 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit. The air temperature is what has changed. It's obviously much cooler. The angle of the sun's rays is different. There are fewer hours of direct sunshine deep in the canyon, on the river. Winter rafters dress and pack very differently from summertime rafters. Lots of fleece is in order for trips this time of year.

Grand Canyon National Park is accessible year round. Be prepared for cold days, cold water and even colder nights.

Let me give you a peek at breakfasts that you might encounter on a Grand Canyon Rafting trip with Arizona River Runners.

First thing every single day on, even before breakfast, is the call for COFFE-E-E-E-E-E. It's loud and clear, and you can roll out of your sleeping bag and get a freshly brewed cup o' joe. You can do this in your PJ's....you don't necessarily have to speak to anybody or be cheery and bright. You can grab your hot mug of caffeine and retreat to some outrageously beautiful and scenic spot to savor your morning mud. Can only be done on a Grand Canyon rafting trip!

We have a variety of watercraft options ranging from motorized rafts to human-powered oar boats. 70% of the travel on the Colorado River is done in motorized rafts that move at a speed of 8-10 mph and allow a person to experience the heart of the Canyon and the biggest white water in North America in a week’s vacation time. Choosing oar-powered or paddle boats can extend your vacation to nearly two weeks and some trips require a hike in or out of the Canyon, allowing you to experience half the canyon in about a week.

All trips allow time for hiking and side-canyon exploring. Outfitters also organize and arrange their trips differently. Arizona River Runners, for example, provides a “trip host” in additional to the full river crew, for all their 3-day trips. The host meets the group on day one and stays with them to the end of the trip handling all transportation details so passengers can just kick back and enjoy the adventure.

In general, it’s best to book your trip as soon as possible as the National Park Service does limit the number of Grand Canyon rafting trips available each year and historically demand exceeds supply. You should particularly consider booking in advance if you have a large group or plan to travel during the prime time of June to mid-August. Starry Starry Nights in the Grand Canyon with Arizona River Runners

Camping under the stars is one of my favorite parts of a Grand Canyon Raft trip with Arizona River Runners. It's not one of those things that you put in the brochure but, for me, it is...well...stellar.

There you are, riverside, on the beach, prone on your cot. The sunlight has receded completely leaving even the tallest canyon walls in darkness. There is total darkness which means stars appear everywhere. You don't get a display like this in the city, or any place that has ambient light. In the sky above the Grand Canyon, darkness is your friend. The Milky Way is a blur of illuminations. It stretches across the sky with authority and grandeur. You'll see satellites as they speed around the earth. Shooting stars will streak across the darkness. They are brilliant for a short time. Their glory is ephemeral, and lucky are you to be gazing in the right place at the right time. You may view the well defined spiraling of another galaxy. Constellations appear for you to recognize.

The night skies are truly awesome in the Grand Canyon. The darkness brings a heavenly display every single night. It is a joy to behold.

Seems lots of people have some preconceived ideas about rafting in the Grand Canyon. I have to make reservations a year in advance. I have to hike into the Grand Canyon to get on the raft. I have to hike out of the Grand Canyon. I have to be super strong and agile. I need a bunch of special equipment…Arizona River Runners will bust these myths one at a time.

Q. Do I have to make reservations a year in advance?

A. Typically...no. If you have a bunch of people that want to go together, and you only have one time slot that works for your group, you should reserve your space as far in advance as possible. But if you are 1, 2, 3, or 4 people and you are somewhat flexible with your timing, you do not have to reserve a year ahead to get a spot. There are lots of openings throughout the entire season. The earlier you call Arizona River Runners about your trip reservation, the more choices you will have. As the year progresses, the schedule fills in and there are fewer openings for you to choose from. Some people have been known to jump on at the very last minute because they are filling a late cancellation. You never know what is available until you call.

Q. Do I have to hike in to get on the raft trip?

A. The majority of Arizona River Runners' trips do not involve hiking in or out. Most rafting trips launch at Lee's Ferry where you simply climb onto the boat and head downstream - no hiking. A few of our trips include hiking in or out of the canyon. Those that take these rafting trips will be accompanied by a hiking escort to ensure your safety.

Q. Do I have to be super strong and agile to enjoy rafting through the Grand Canyon?

A. You do not have to be the ultimate specimen of fitness to enjoy a Grand Canyon Raft trip. It can be challenging at times, but it does not require you to be unusually strong or agile. Just how fit do you need to be, to enjoy a Grand Canyon raft trip? Good question? Ask yourself....can I get up out of bed (a cot)? Can I make my way across uneven surfaces? Can I sit for long periods of time? Can I walk or hike when the urge strikes? Can I walk in soft sand? The Grand Canyon Association and Grand Canyon National Park has dedicated a new rim-based amphitheater and landmark feature at Mather Point on Grand Canyon's South Rim! The new amphitheater allows park visitors to view the Canyon's famous vistas from a beautiful location, while seated on native limestone. The amphitheater's setting, adjacent to the rim, seats approximately 50 to 80 people, providing space for ranger talks or viewing the Canyon's sunrise and sunsets in a peaceful spot.

The landmark feature, honoring the Native American tribes affiliated with Grand Canyon National Park, is also created from native limestone. This feature has a plaza with a meeting area for visitors walking to and from Mather Point. Stone slabs in the construction include etchings inspired by stories with input gathered from these tribes. The Grand Canyon Association and Grand Canyon National Park are thankful to the Salt River Project and their partners: U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Arizona Public Service, NV Energy and Tucson Electric Power -- owners of the Navajo Generating Station -- for providing the funding to help construct these two key elements at Mather Point near the park's main visitor center -- the landmark feature and Mather Point Amphitheater. Arizona River Runners End of the Year Party

So, we had an end-o-the-season, Arizona River Runners company party last weekend. Kind of a low key affair. Dinner and drinks....some photos (some vintage and some current)......announcements and acknowledgements and, as always, some great music--- just us jammin' in the music room upstairs.

I love this party. For me, it's sort of like Parents' Night at the University. First of all, I am old enough to be most everybody's mom, and secondly I love and adore these people that work for us. They are incredible human beings. Great characters, each and every one of them. Strong, beautiful, funny, smart, adventurous, caring, and talented. Most of them have great plans for the off season. I can now live vicariously through them.

We, at Arizona River Runners are like family. We are a gaggle, a herd, a pride and a batch. We connect, and that makes us a great company. May I be so bold as to say that I believe we....our office people, our warehouse people, our drivers and our guides.... are tops, and that is good for us, and good for you too.

I first met my husband on an Arizona River Runners Grand Canyon rafting trip. So, it goes without saying that he is an outdoorsy person. I must be too, because there I was, solo (and single) embarking on this major adventure.

Through years of marriage and raising kids, we have enjoyed lots of camping, hiking and rafting. Spending time out of doors, in our minds, is one of the greatest growth opportunities. This is an excellent question. How adventurous or hearty or skillful or CRAZY do I need to be to raft the Grand Canyon? Do I need special skills or equipment? All excellent questions, and very easily addressed.

I'm pretty easy to please in the food/eating department. A real appealing part of this is that somebody else prepares my meal AND cleans up afterwards. That is certainly the case on an Arizona rafting vacation with Arizona River Runners. Don't get me wrong.....the food on ARR rafting trips gets high marks in the culinary realm on it's own. The fact that I enjoy great meals with very little effort on my part is a bonus.

I've tried to duplicate some of the wonderful cuisine that I enjoyed in camps along the way and the one that is clearly a standout is Mexican Train Wreck. It is a salad that is served at lunch in a pita pocket. I've served it many times without the beauty of the Grand Canyon as a backdrop and everybody still loves it.

Here's the recipe I go by:

MEXICAN TRAIN WRECK

Serves a big bunch

3-4 c. chicken, canned or grilled, cut into bite size

1 c. tomato, diced

1/2 c. onion, diced

1 14 oz. can black olives, chopped

1 14 oz. can beans (black, pinto or kidney), drained

1 c. shredded cheddar cheese

1 c. salsa

1/2 c. avocado chunks or guacamole

1/2 c. sour cream

1/2 head of lettuce, chopped or shredded

2 c. tortilla chips, crumbled slightly

Mix all together. Serve with salsa, guacamole, sour cream, shredded cheese and chips.

Spoon into pita pocket or serve over a bed of shredded lettuce.

This recipe is quite flexible and can be tweaked to your liking. I often leave out the crumbled chips and the shredded lettuce so that leftovers can be enjoyed the next day or frozen.

When you raft the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon with Arizona River Runners you will enjoy some really good food. It won't be your typical camping food or that dehydrated stuff. No way! It will be delicious, fresh foods cooked by your guides, who really know their way around the kitchen.

A week on the river with Arizona River Runners might include chicken breast, grilled over hot coals or thick, juicy pork chops. Some nights the dutch ovens turn out lasagna that will offer you choice of meaty or vegetarian. You might savor a pineapple upside down cake still warm from the dutch oven or brownies, gooey and hot. Salmon steaks are one of my favorites. Mexican night offers chicken fajitas or maybe burritos that you build yourself. Rib-eyes just off the grill comes with a bucket of garlic mashed potatoes. Fresh veggies and fruit make perfect salads and sides.

Breakfast beckons you out of your sleeping bag. Every day starts with hot coffee, tea and juice. Some mornings it's eggs to order or blueberry pancakes with sausage. Build your own omelet and watch the chefs skillfully fold it all together for you. There's fresh fruit, yogurt, granola and oatmeal too. Bite into a toasted muffin spread with jam or peanut butter. Perhaps French toast will be a favorite of yours.

At lunch, pile up a dagwood sandwich with sliced turkey, roast beef or ham with choice of avocado, tomato, lettuce, cheese, red onion.....I'm sure I'm leaving out lots of stuff. There'll be olives and pickles and peppers too. Peanut butter and jelly is also available. ARR guides also make a really fab tuna salad.

One of the most popular lunches is called Mexican Train Wreck. You put everything that would be in a mexican food meal, plus the salsa, sour cream, lettuce and chips and chunks of chicken into a bowl. Stir well and..... Wa! La! You've got Mexican Train Wreck. It's a delicious twist on chicken salad.

You won't have ALL of these things on one trip....there just simply isn't enough time but those are a sampling of the kinds of meals that you will savor. Sure, Sara Lee makes an appearance with cheesecake and the like. We appreciate her talents.

One of the things I do at Arizona River Runners is read all the questionnaires that our guests fill out and return to us after their Grand Canyon rafting trip. It's really quite fun. I did my first Grand Canyon Raft trip when I was in my early 20's. I was single, playing and teaching racquetball for a living and working as a server in a restaurant. I had traveled half way around the world in my short life but had yet to do a Grand Canyon raft trip. So, when the opportunity came up....I jumped on it.

I had the time and I had the money so, without knowing a soul on the trip, I signed up and went on my first Grand Canyon Raft trip with Arizona River Runners. I remember after our orientation, standing at Lee's Ferry with my life jacket on, about to get onto the rafts and thinking to myself....."Did I just pay all this money and I'm going to die?!" Here I was, the great adventurer, jock, strong, independent woman (hear me roar!) and I was second guessing my latest choice of adventure.

As I watched our blonde, bronzed river guide packing his boat, my next thought was "The guides go down the river, come back, do it again and again and again so it must be okay." With this thought in my head, I clamored onto my first raft and my life was forever changed. It was an adventure beyond anything I expected or could have hoped for.

That was 34 years ago. I married that blonde, bronzed river guide. We ran the river together as crew for 3 years, and now we have two grown daughters working on the river.

Grand Canyon Rafting ~ Arizona River Runners Off Season

The end of another great summer of Grand Canyon Rafting is coming soon. Commercial use of the river, which allows public access, runs from mid April to mid October each year. Arizona River Runners' rafting adventures for 2010 will soon be over. It will officially be our off season.

Through the winter months there is plenty of activity on the Colorado River within the Grand Canyon. Research replaces vacationing. Scientists and their teams travel the river and study wildlife. They study flora. They study fish. They study the river itself; the flows, the sediments and the temperatures. National Park Service sends teams and work crews to work on the trails and beaches. There is another whole community that flourishes along the river corridor throughout the winter.

For Arizona River Runners Inc., it's time to leave the river. Winter time is when the equipment will be repaired, replaced and readied for your next Grand Canyon rafting vacation. The guides, too, leave the Grand Canyon that they love and must find worthwhile activities for the winter.

They have shown their skills as they guided many of you through the vastness of the Grand Canyon. They surely could spend their winter months employed as an Activities Director or chef. Maybe you are not a great swimmer. Maybe you don't really like deep water. Perhaps you don't swim at all. Not to worry - rafting in the Grand Canyon is just that.....it's rafting.....not swimming. Let's dive into that thought.

The water of the Colorado River within the walls of the Grand Canyon is very cold. It's 50 degrees Fahrenheit or there about. It warms up as you go and may get way up to 55 degrees or so by the time you're downstream. For most, that is still cold. Often times there is a strong current. For darn certain, this is not swimming water. This is not water you will be spending any amount of time in. This chilly water will zap your strength quickly if you are submerged. But, again, not to worry. You likely won't be involuntarily swimming on your raft trip. Arizona River Runners provides boats, guides and life jackets to see that you have safe passage through some of the largest navigable whitewater in the northern hemisphere. Yeee haa - that's some fun stuff!

Clouds take on an increased importance during your Grand Canyon Rafting Trip. They serve an array of functions; likely, functions that you've not often considered. Sometimes they are a welcomed ally. Other times they are a dark threat.

They are a dramatic addition to all your photos. High flying wisps of cirrus clouds play across your view finder. White, dense, humongous, puffy specimens of cumulus clouds make the blue of the sky even more vibrant. They hover high in the atmosphere or cling to the canyon walls around you.

Starry Starry Nights (On an Arizona River Runners Rafting Trip)

When was the last time you slept under the stars? Were you a kid? Have you ever slept under the night sky? Camping along the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon gives you the IMAX of star gazing.

On the river the Milky Way commonly appears as a flurry of so many stars that it is a magnificent, starry presence in the night sky. There are so many stars that they blur together. On a cloudless night it stretches lazily across your entire view.

You can track a satellite as it hurtles through outer space. Watch as it moves through the darkness, made visible to you only by it's reflection of the sun's light. Not all that moves are satellites. Don't be fooled by airplanes, maybe a red-eye heading for Los Angeles. Satellites are plentiful. They have jobs to do.

Constellations are everywhere. The Big Dipper, The Little Dipper, Orion's Belt, North Star, the Scorpion. Your view of this starry display will vary. As you slumber through the night, the stars will march across your view in the sky. The moon may rise and diminish their brightness but they are still there. No doubt you will witness some shooting stars.....these sprinters slash across the darkness. They flare brightly as they burn and die away.

As morning light creeps into the sky, the stars begin their retreat. The light of the sun overpowers their brilliance. But they are always there and they will show themselves again tomorrow night when the sunshine passes and the clouds vanish and darkness settles in.

Arizona River Runners: Those Brazen Ravens (say that 10 times real fast!)

Ravens are a medium-sized, common black bird. They are plentiful in the Grand Canyon on a Colorado River rafting trip, especially the spots where people visit. They are scavengers of the most skilled kind. Used to be, they waited on the rocks, sort of across the way until we campers left the beach. Then, they would swoop in and devour whatever little tidbits might be left from lunch or dinner or whatever else we rafters were obliged to have left behind for their delight.

Not so anymore. These skilled thieves can open zippers and sleuth out buried treasure in your bag. They don't even wait for everybody to leave. I've known them to swoop down and snatch a baggy, no doubt filled with important items for some unsuspecting camper. On my last trip, at camp, they opened my big bag, removed my wallet (it was shiny), and proceeded to spew my credit cards, driver’s license, and all across the sand. They even pecked at the dollar bills! We noticed the commotion from about 50 feet away, and had to sprint over to shoo them away.

They are no longer satisfied with crumbs and leftovers. They have honed their skills so that they can get into your things and do some damage. I was lucky; the aggressive thieves didn't carry away my stuff. You can learn from this and remember to keep your things under wraps until you need them.

One of my favorite things to behold on a Grand Canyon Rafting trip is to see a 10 year old chatting away with a 75 year old. Or maybe a granny sharing thoughts with a 20 year old hip dude. Things like this happen a lot in the heart of the Grand Canyon.

People on an Arizona River Runners rafting trip have the time and opportunity to get to know each other. Fellow rafters have converged from all ends of the earth, from diverse ethnicity and cultures. Ages may span many decades and economics no longer has any bearing on interaction. The electronic distractions have been eliminated. As you embark on your Grand Canyon Rafting Trip, do yourself a favor and take off your watch. Lose the timepiece and lose yourself in the moment. Face it.....you are not in control here.You need not worry about it either. With Arizona River Runners, you are in very capable hands.

The river is ultimately in charge.Your guides will assess all the conditions and will choreograph a trip that is especially suited to you and your time in the Grand Canyon. What hour it might be, is of no importance to you while you are on your raft trip. What is essential, is how you relate to WHAT and WHO is around you.

Footcare 101 by Arizona River Runners

While you are on your Grand Canyon Rafting Trip, you are going to want to hike, and walk around, and scamper over rocks, and jump off stuff you never really expected.

So it's crucial that you keep your feet in good shape. Do this by (1) wear comfortable sandals/shoes. (2) Be sure that you have broken in your footwear before you get to the river. Wear your footwear around the house some to get them ready, even if they are shoes that you have worn before. (3) Bring socks in case you get a blister or sunburn that you need to protect. (4) If you need more support for hiking, bring shoes to hike in. Keep in mind that almost every hike will be in water at some point. (5) Put sunscreen on your feet. (6) Re-apply sunscreen often. (7) NEVER GO BAREFOOT (in bed maybe, but NEVER while you are upright).

Your feet are an integral part of your Grand Canyon Rafting experience. If they are a hurtin' in any way, it makes it much more difficult to do what you came to the river to do.

Have a blast! Be smart and take good care of your feet. You'll have more fun if you do, and your feet will thank you!

Rain anywhere in the watershed that feeds into the Grand Canyon can make side streams roar. Some canyons and hikes are to be avoided because of the danger of flash flooding. Arizona River Runners is in the rafting business. We've got all the licenses and permits and prerequisites to guide you through the Grand Canyon, show you what AWESOME really means, keep you safe and to bring you home in one piece.

We do not, however, have a liquor license (I don't think any of the outfitters have a liquor license) and therefore, we do not provide alcoholic beverages. So, it's definitely a B.Y.O.B. situation. You bring what you would like to drink. We provide water (no pun intended), soda, lemonade, coffee, tea, and juice...stuff like that. You are welcome to bring the specific things that you enjoy - alcoholic or otherwise.

Here's where it gets "sticky". Let's say somebody brings lots of “whatever is their favorite beverage." It's nearly impossible to label each can or bottle but hopefully, you will not be dipping in to somebody else's things unless specifically invited. This may sound petty but if you are addicted to Dr. Pepper and everybody on the raft is drinking up your supply.... this could be a problem. Or you may not want to share your wine that you and your sweetie discovered on your honeymoon 25 years ago.

Sometimes it's hard to know what's what and whose is whose. A lot of it is supplied by Arizona River Runners for you to enjoy, but some of it might belong to a fellow rafter. Quite simply, IF IN DOUBT---- ASK.

Drinking lots of water is important. Hydration, hydration, hydration. But that is another whole topic.

Different Trips For Different Folks with Arizona River Runners

So, you checked out Arizona River Runners website and now you're undecided about which trip to choose. 3 days, 8 days. What's the difference?

Right up front, let me make it quite clear that the 3-day trip does NOT go where the longer trips go just floating really fast. No!

The longer river trips typically start at Lee's Ferry and travel downstream 187 miles to Whitmore Wash where a helicopter awaits those people for a breathtaking flight out of the Grand Canyon. This is where the 3-day people enter the river. So, after having spent a day at the Bar 10 Ranch along the Arizona Strip, the 3-day people swap seats with those leaving the river, on both the helicopter and the raft, as their river time starts at Whitmore Wash and continues downstream for more fun and fabulous scenery. The river is emerging out of the depths of the Grand Canyon. The corridor is widening and the rapids are less extreme. There is still grandeur to behold and rapids to ride but it is not the closeness of the Inner Gorge or the ebony Vishnu Schist that corrals the torrential waters upstream.

There are millions of awesome things to see in the Grand Canyon. You could spend a lifetime and never explore everything. But, in 25 words or less...the longer your raft trip is, the more time you have to explore off-river sites. There are Indians ruins, petroglyphs, fossils, waterfalls, grottos, pioneer homes, side creeks running turquoise blue, and places of immense serenity beckoning to your senses.

Arizona River Runners and The Bar 10 Ranch Celebrate 25 Years of Adventure!

This summer, Arizona River Runners is celebrating 25 years of flying river-rafting guests to the Bar 10 Ranch, a working cattle ranch on the Arizona Strip. Sharing the ranch experience with rafting guests provides visitors the opportunity to see a different part of the Canyon during their journey. Five generations of the Heaton family have been ranching on their property, located on a distinctive, narrow piece of land on the north side of the Grand Canyon, since the early 1970’s.

Arizona River Runners guests see ranch hands in action during their visit - doing everything needed to keep the ranch operating smoothly and also providing musical entertainment and dancing for guests. The Bar 10 produces their own all-natural grass fed beef (Bar10Beef.com) on their 10,000 deeded acres, with grazing rights to 225,000 acres of Bureau of Land Management and Arizona State lands. The current ranching operations run approximately 1,000 head of cattle.

“Back in the day” it was common to add an airstrip for ease of “commuting” to and from town, which was over an hour away. It was about this same time rafting the Colorado River became a popular tourist activity. It wasn’t long before hundreds of people were floating down the river through the Grand Canyon, just a short distance from the Bar 10. When cattle prices fell, and interest rates soared, patriarch Tony Heaton recognized a business opportunity in the Colorado River. By the time river rafters got to a point near his Bar 10 Ranch, they had already been on the river for six or seven days, the length of time most people go for a vacation. Tony offered rafting companies the option to end their trip a few days earlier – just below the climactic Lava Falls Rapid, and use his airstrip to catch flights back to Las Vegas. He quickly organized teams of mules, and he and his four young sons were soon bringing awestruck tourists up from the river to his ranch, on mules, then in a converted school bus to the airstrip back to Las Vegas. Soon, Tony brought rafters to the Canyon for the shorter trips the outfitters offered.

It was about 1983 that Tony decided to build the lodge to heighten the river runners’ ranch experience. Tony and Ruby transported all the lumber, brick, windows, and other materials over the eighty miles of dirt road in a cattle truck.

All six Heaton children labored beside their parents, with unyielding commitment, energy and enthusiasm.

Later they added covered wagons to provide additional, private sleeping, and were surprised by their popularity with guests. In 1985, the Heatons set aside the mules in favor of helicopters and quickly saw the numbers of visitors to the Bar 10 Ranch increase to 6,000 per season.

Today the ranch sees over 13,000 guests a year, with rafting season from April into October. In addition to river guests, they welcome individuals, families, and groups. Guests are treated to delicious country-style buffet meals, using their own all-natural grass fed beef (Bar10Beef.com). The Bar 10 crew provides evening entertainment, and ranch activities include horseback riding, skeet shooting, hiking, and relaxing. ATV rides and helicopter tours are also available.

Harness the Sun With Arizona River Runners

The water of the Colorado River in the stretch that runs through the Grand Canyon has spilled through Glen Canyon Dam from Lake Powell. This same water has not seen the light of day for a long time and therefore it is very cool. You might say it is downright chilly. At the launch of your Grand Canyon Rafting Trip with Arizona River Runners the water temperature is right around 50 degrees Fahrenheit (or 10 degrees Celsius). That's chilly! It will warm a bit as it courses down the river. It may climb into the high 50's by the end of your trip!

There are advantages and disadvantages to the water being this cold. On the plus side, if you get bit by a pesky red ant, you can soothe your ant bite in the river water. Also, the cold river acts as a constant cooler for your drag-bag of drinks, and a good dousing provides quick relief on a baking hot, summer day.

On the negative side, it makes for very chilly bathing. All soaps, shampoos, lotions and potions are to be used solely in the main river corridor. The warmer side streams that you may hike in are quite attractive for bathing, but they are protected environments and therefore are off limits to soaps etc. Most Grand Canyon Rafters find it to be quite workable to swim, play and bathe in the main river.

If you just can't stand the thought of bathing in 50 degree water, perhaps lots of baby wipes will work or bring a solar shower. You can fill it from the river and heat it on the raft during the day (being careful not to get it too hot!) The most difficult part of your solar shower experience will be finding a way (or somebody) to hold it up while you enjoy the warmth.

Arizona River Runners’ Rafts - What Are They Like?

Arizona River Runners has a pretty sweet motor rig. Our rafts are inflatable rubber tubes that are lashed to pieces of metal framework for strength and stability. An outboard motor is clamped to the back to give some guidance and propulsion. Boxes and large coolers are aboard and they contain everything. The coolers are in the very center of the rafts. The cold river constantly splashes the bottoms of the rafts. By day, they are covered by gear and by night they become the guides sleeping quarters. Storage bins are covered by 3" pads to make your seating on the boat quite comfy.

The inflatable tubes are made of many chambers so that a leak does not affect the whole raft. Each boat carries a spare motor, an air pump and lots of spare parts. River trips typically run two boats together for safety reasons as well as great photo opportunities.

There is an oval tube that forms the center of the raft and two straight tubes, one on either side, that come to a point in the front. The tip or snout of these tubes is called the "horn". It's a real rodeo up there and there are times when you can ride 'em cowboy. As a passenger, you can control how exciting you want your ride to be. There are parts of the boat that get all the excitement (water) all the time and there are places to sit that are much tamer and less wet. You can make your choice at any given time. You can change it up from time to time; even change boats from day to day. Get to know the other guides and people on the other boat.

When all the gear is packed and you're all aboard, heading down the might Colorado, the views are amazing. Our boats are built and packed so you don't have to crane your neck all day to get in the sights and sounds the canyon has to offer. You can relax back (on the gear) and gaze up into the canyon! Extreme Tanning in the Grand Canyon on Your Arizona River Runners Rafting Trip

You are about to embark on a wonderful adventure on the Colorado River as is winds its way through the Grand Canyon. You will see and do and learn things that will forever hold a special place in your soul. Much of your Grand Canyon Rafting Trip will be in wilderness areas; remote and far, far, away from the electronics of the rim world.

You and your fellow rafters will eat, sleep and play out of doors. By day, you may have clear skies. Clouds might provide respite from the sun's burning rays or clouds might provide torrents of rain. In the Grand Canyon, clear skies, the color of deep oceans, can stretch endlessly above you. These are extreme tanning days.

Take care. Protect yourself from burning under the sun. Especially vulnerable areas are: 1) the top of your hatless head, 2) your ears peeking out from under your hat, 3) tops of your shoulders, 4) tops of your thighs from your shorts to your knees, 5) tops of your feet and toes peeking out of your sandals. These areas are facing up, straight toward the sun as you sit on the boat. The sun's rays are intense in the Grand Canyon. Couple that with the fact that you are outside all day long.

Sun protection is a must. Sunscreens and lotions, a good hat, long sleeved shirts and long pants (scrubs are wonderful) are your best defense. Remember, you don’t need super high SPF protection, anything above a 30 just adds more chemicals to your skin, but you use what you like. Our motto is :Apply, Reapply, Repeat."

No matter what level of tanning you might enjoy, it is important not to get burned. Sunburn, sand and more sunshine is a miserable combination. A combination you'd like to avoid. The sand and the sunshine are always going to be there. It's up to you to avoid the “burn.”

Rafting a River Dance With Arizona River Runners

The Colorado River in the Grand Canyon is a pool-drop type river. That means that the current beginning below Glen Canyon Dam (this is officially Marble Canyon) flows smoothly until something gets in its path. That would be rocks. The water "pools" upstream from the rocks until it "drops" over. Sometimes a huge boulder may sit alone in the middle of the current or other times large deposits of debris have been washed into the main river current from a side canyon. This forms the rapids. The river "pools" serenely above the rapid, spills over to continue on and the boats drop down to the river below. None of these look anything like a waterfall. The drop in elevation slopes downward so that there is a navigable path for you and the rafts. It's thrilling. It's wet. It's powerful.

As the water level changes so, too, does the relationship between the water and the rocks. Some rapids become more exciting and dynamic when the water flow increases, while some rapids become less of a ride. On the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, water levels vary depending on the release from Glen Canyon Dam. Water is enormously powerful, rocks move around, and the rapids change. This is truly the river dance. It is a dance that every ARR guide is thrilled to share with you.

We would like to share a letter with you from a rafter who went on our June 8th, 6-Day Trip. Enjoy!

Dear Arizona River Runners,

When my mom first proposed the idea of a white-water rafting trip I have to admit I was slightly more than apprehensive about spending five days with twenty plus strangers, eating, sleeping, and boating together. As I was later to discover my worries were unwarranted and the trip turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. I have traveled all over the world, and taken several guided tours through national parks. My encounter on the Colorado River trough the Grand Canyon was some of the most beautiful and peaceful scenes I have ever witnessed.

The crew: Ani Stube, Dan Hall, Michael "MAC" Cornwell and Greg Eastwood were truly amazing from the start. All were welcoming, friendly and very knowledgeable. They were of constant entertainment and maneuvered the river as if they had been riding it their entire lives. Travis Veracammen, our Trip Leader, was exceptional. His love for the canyon showed in everything he did. His constant vigilance for all of us campers kept everyone safe. Most of all, he kept everyone around him laughing. This is a remarkable person and I am so thankful to have had him as our Trip Leader.

By the end of our journey, the entire group had melded into an extended family. Our experience in the canyon with Arizona River Runners brought us together like nothing I have ever come across before, and I credit that to the wonderful spirits of our guides. All shared tears when it came time to go our separate ways. ARR provided my family and me with more than a vacation; it gave us a life changing experience that will stay with us forever.

Duct Tape on Your Arizona River Runners Rafting Trip?

Really, when we reflect on the world of possibilities.... there are very few situations that can't be improved with Duct Tape. That's right. Consider that lowly, common roll of silver gray tape. It can be used to patch your sandals or fix the strap on a water bottle. A little known fact about duct tape is that each year a college scholarship is awarded to a student that makes their high school prom dress (or tuxedo) out of duct tape. Oh, but let's stick to applications of that common, linear stickiness to river purposes.

Arizona River Runner guides have it readily available, so no need for you to bring your own. Unless of course, you are hoping for one of the many bright colors they now come in. Real river rats only use silver. Let's just name a few of the most likely uses.

Tape over a blister rubbed by new sandals. Duct tape effectively protects your boo boos so that you can continue with your fabulous Grand Canyon adventure. Duct tape “band aids” work well for feet, hands and any other body part.

Tape that rip in your backpack. Or close up the hole left by a ring-tailed cat exploring your bag.

Re-attach the sole of your sandal to the strappy part. Repair any other "blow outs" that may have occurred.

Make a loop for your cup on your life jacket.

Repair damage to sunglasses or glasses.

Mend your britches.

Label your "Hefty trash bag" luggage. Sometimes this is your best choice when you are leaving the river.

Shore up your favorite hat that has served you well on your Grand Canyon trip but has suffered greatly during the week's escapades.

The applications for Duct Tape are endless. When you head out for your ARR raft trip, file this info in your brain so that when life happens, you have the limitless arsenal of duct tape as a tool to the solution of just about anything that comes your way.

Do NOT bring your own, personal snacks on a Grand Canon rafting trip...here's why. Ziploc loc bags are quite possibly your best friend on a Grand Canyon Rafting Trip

Why, you ask? Let me count the reasons:

Wrap up dirty, mucky sandals or shoes.
Corral wet clothes.
Pack away a stinky, worn outfit.
Keep your wallet dry in the bottom of your bag. You’re going to need it to get home.
Shampoo and other gooey lotions and potions have boundaries is a baggie.
Keep your toothbrush and toothpaste together. This is extremely handy.
Tissues do much better in a bag.
Put your “flying home” clothes is a bag of their own.
Toiletries pack well in a simple ziploc baggie.
Use a ziploc as your own personal trash receptacle in your campsite. Dispose of it in the morning.
A ziploc bag with some ice makes a great ice pack for “boo-boos”
Here’s the biggy…stash you camera(s) in a ziploc, it protects them from water and the sand!

These are just of the few ways to use baggies. There are plenty more. Remember for your trip, use them while packing, and then throw in a dozen more assorted sizes too. They don’t take up any room at all, and you’ll be glad you have them along!

Rosanne Rosanna Bandana and Arizona River Runners

The simple cotton bandana is one of the more practical items you can bring on your Grand Canyon rafting trip. Aside from the points you get for style, it has many other uses as well. Moisten it and wear it around your head, neck or shoulders and it will instantly cool you down. This is a good ploy throughout the day or for when you head out on a hike. Your friendly bandana can save you from sunburn… just cover the areas that are constantly in the sun, knees, feet or ankles, and ward off those blistering rays. For more traditional uses, you can blow your nose, wipe the sweat from your brow, or use it as a napkin! Don’t forget, there’s always the do-rag application or babushka for those bad hair days (and you will have them!). A few other ways to use your bandana: a headband or hair tie, clean your glasses, this comes in very handy as your glasses do get splashed. These are just a few of the ways your bandana can be functional. Above everything else, it’s easy to pack, inexpensive and comes in a plethora of colors. Make sure you have washed it a few times before you go if possible. The older the better. Wow! Get yourself one - even our guides wear them.

Meteor Showers Over the Grand Canyon and Whitewater Rafting with Arizona River Runners

If this is how clear the sky is in the morning, just imagine it at night!

Stargazing in the Grand Canyon is well – grand! The complete absence of light (except for the moon at times) enables you to see the stars at their most glorious. When the last camper has gone to bed, and all is quiet you are blanketed by a night sky bursting with stars, stars so bright you want to reach out and touch them. The night sky in the Canyon is indescribable; at certain times of the year you may even see meteor showers.

The Grand Canyon is the perfect location not only for stargazing, but to behold a meteor shower as well. Small fragments of cosmic debris entering the earth’s atmosphere at extremely high speeds produce meteor showers. Each time a comet swings by the sun, it produces large amounts of small particles, which will eventually spread out along the entire orbit of the comet to form a meteoroid "stream." Depending on where the Earth's orbit and the comet's orbit intersect, meteors appear to fall from a particular place in the sky for a few days, maybe within the neighborhood of a constellation, thereby giving the meteor shower its name.

Perseid meteors will appear to "rain" into the atmosphere from the constellation Perseus, which rises in the northeast around 10 p.m. in mid-August. At its peak, the shower could produce up to 100 meteors per hour. This year's shower should peak on the night of August 12 and the morning of the 13^th. The thin, crescent moon will be out of the way early, setting the stage for a potentially spectacular show. (There is the possibility of seeing meteors any time from July 23 - August 22 as well). The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Perseus. For best viewing, look to the northeast after midnight.

Grand Canyon Rafting Trips with Arizona River Runners

If you are planning a river trip or are going on one, you may be asking yourself: "What's the water like on a rafting trip?" The stretch of water in the Colorado River that runs through the Grand Canyon is typically about 50 degrees all the time. So, you have to ask yourself..."Why is it so chilly?" Here's why. The water comes from deep in Lake Powell through Glen Canyon Dam. The flumes are about 400 or so feet down from the surface of Lake Powell and the water has not seen the sunlight in a long, long time ~ that's why it is so cold. The National Park Service (they are in charge since this is in Grand Canyon National Park) wants the water temperature to be the most favorable for the indigenous wildlife and fish. We humans might prefer water temperatures at 80 degrees (or warmer) but we are not at the top of this particular food chain.

Fishing on the Colorado River with Arizona River Runners

Is there fishing on the Colorado River? Will we have time to fish on our rafting trip? What do we do with the fish, if we catch any?

These are all valid questions to ask when planning a Grand Canyon rafting trip with Arizona River Runners. Yes, there is fishing on the Colorado River. Yes, you can fish on your rafting trip; and you eat the fish you catch! Our guides can do a fish fry like nobody’s business!

The National Parks Service requires you to have an Arizona State Fishing License, contact Arizona Game and Fish Department at http://www.azgfd.gov/h_f/fishing.shtml for more information.

Fishing in the Canyon can be great, bring a collapsible fishing pole for easy storage. Among trout fishing circles it is widely known that some very good fishing is to be had in the Colorado River. You’ll be fishing from shore at camp in the evening or during the day when we’ve stopped for lunch or hiking. The Colorado River, Marble Canyon, and lower portions of Bright Angel Creek, Nankoweap Creek and Tapeats Creek and Lake Mead are good for fishing. Fishes native to the Canyon include Humpback Chub (a federally endangered species), Razorback Sucker (endangered), Flannelmouth Sucker, Bluehead Sucker, Colorado Squawfish, Bonytail (endangered), Roundtail Chub and Speckled Dace.

There are a number of species not native to the Grand Canyon. Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Common Carp, Channel Catfish, Red Shiner, Fathead Minnow, Mosquitofish, Striped Bass and Plains Killifish to name just a few. For bait, some people just use leftovers from breakfast or dinner! Insects, flies, minnows, and other bugs can be used too.

Multigenerational Grand Canyon Rafting Adventure with Arizona River Runners

Functional Footwear Facts for Your Grand Canyon Whitewater Trip

Take a minute to consider your footwear for your upcoming Grand Canyon Raft trip. There are a few different aspects that you need to consider when making your choices. One of the more important things to realize is that most every hike or walk that you go on, will probably encounter water. You will almost always walk through or swim through some water while you have your shoes on, so, you probably don't want to bring your good hiking boots. The footwear that you do bring should:

1) Be comfortable wet or dry.

2) Have good traction on land and on the boat.

3) Have enough support to hold them to your feet while scrambling on rocks or around the boat.

I've done 40 or 50 Grand Canyon river trips and I don't ever take sneakers. I take 2 pairs of sandals. Something like Tevas or Chacos. (One of my pairs I bought at Target and they have lasted 10 trips and are still going strong.) They have straps over the toes and around my ankle from behind my heel. I can tighten them so that I can climb rocks and hike in them. They are rubber so that I can get them wet, they still have good traction and are comfy.

You may want to bring sneakers. We have a "Shoe Bag" on the boat for you to keep them in if you want them during the day. Just remember the whole water everywhere thing. Some people like the support of dry sneakers for in camp at night. You'll pack those in your personal bag. Campsites are often on very fine sand. Footwear that traps the sand can get uncomfortable. Flip-flops are very workable for camp too.

Critically important --- break in your footwear before you get to the river. Even if you have had them for a long time, wear them and soften them up again before your trip. If you don't want to do this then bring socks to wear to protect all those blisters you will undoubtedly develop. Socks may look really geeky with sandals but at least you will be able to walk. Sometimes the sand causes even well broken-in shoes to rub your feet and cause problems. We have lots of band aids to take care of you!

Rafting the Grand Canyon is What the Trip is All About, But That’s Not All….

It is true; rafting is what you do on a Colorado River Rafting Trip with Arizona River Runners. But that isn’t all! You will be “entertained” for your entire journey. From the time you get to the Canyon (or even before, such as the helicopter ride on our 3 Day Escape), you will not be bored or wanting for something to do! Each trip is unique on its own, filled with exciting and fun things.

Our 3-Day Escape provides you with a scenic flight to the Bar-10 Ranch on the North Rim of the Canyon. Here you can spend the night at the Ranch or in a covered wagon! In the morning you are helicoptered to the Canyon floor. Rafting and hiking, not to mention eating, follows for the next day and a half.

Our longer trips involve more intense rafting, and there are some with a “hike-in” or “hike-out” before or after your rafting adventure! The longer trips provide more opportunities for additional off-river time to take in the spectacular vistas and side stream hikes, to explore along the side stream corridor.

During the evenings our guides feed (yeah!) and entertain you. On clear nights, stargazing is a favorite pastime of our rafters. Where you sleep is a vision – look up and take in all the stars, you’ll never see anything like it again!

Did you know there are about 1737 known species of vascular plants (such as ferns, flowering plants, conifers, clubmosses and other gymnosperms), 167 species of fungi, 64 species of moss and 195 species of lichen that are found in Grand Canyon National Park? The park is home to the rare Tusayan Flamethrower, with approximately 1000 plants identified in 10 small populations; and the park has one Federally-listed endangered species called the sentry milkvetch, a perennial mat-forming herb.

River Fashionista Tips from Arizona River Runners – Function Follows Fashion!

So you are heading out on a rafting trip and are wondering what to wear. We all want to look great in those vacation photos (check these out and post your own on Flickr), so here are some head-to-toe tips for packing light and staying comfortable throughout your ARR experience.

You will be out in the sun. That means you may want to wear a hat, especially if you are follically challenged. But even for those with a full head of hair, a brim helps keep the sun out of your eyes. Your hat should have a strap, because you don't want to lose it if the water gets wild or the wind kicks up.

Quick-drying nylon shorts and bathing suits are great, but being out in the sun means you'll need protection for your skin. Nylon pants and a light nylon, cotton or quick-drying long sleeved shirt are great for layering in case you start to burn.

For cooler times and rainy weather, a lightweight fleece or fleece lined will help you keep cozy. Rain gear is a MUST! Look for quality pieces that are waterproof, not just water resistant. The point is to stay dry! Pants and jackets with elastic cuffs at the ankle and sleeve work best. A jacket with a hood will keep you much dryer than a poncho, and really a jacket is so much more fashionable. Ponchos are so last year.

Bring two pairs of shoes - it's nice to have dry feet in camp, and you'll need to wear shoes on the raft, which will get wet. Tennis/athletic shoes are recommended, and you can bring sturdy sports sandals with heel straps (no flip flops). Red Rock Outfitters has some great options. Think Teva, Chaco, Merrill - you know outdoorsy. This is the Grand Canyon we're talking about! Socks are nice for camp, and also if you develop sore spots from any of your shoes. In any case, try to bring shoes that are already broken in and comfy.

Don't be tempted to wear a different outfit in every photo. Really! Everyone will be wearing the same thing more than once, getting sand on their stuff, and hanging things out to dry. It's just the way we roll. Pack light in a soft gym-type bag and we'll pack it into our waterproof bags before we head out.

Arizona River Runners Early Season Trip Information!

Because you trip is earlier in the season of our Grand Canyon rafting trips, we would like to suggest a few additional clothing items. The weather at this time is usually very pleasant, but we always have the slightest possibility of a late storm moving through the area. If this occurs, these additional items will come in very handy. We strongly suggest you bring them, and then be happy when you don't have to use them!

Polypropylene or Capilene long underwear (tops and bottoms) - you can get these pretty much anywhere, major retailers, camping or sporting goods stores
Wool hat - just an old ski cap will do.
Wool or Polypropylene socks
Gloves - wool gloves are good. You might also consider another pair of gloves to wear on the raft. There are neoprene gloves that are water resistant, again major retailers, sporting and camping stores should carry a pair of these for under $25.
A pair of fleece pants are also helpful.

The layered clothing approach works well if it gets cold. The long underwear followed by fleece pants, fleece sweater or warm jacket and the good quality rain gear as the last main layer will work well. With the addition of the hat and gloves, you should be set for any weather conditions!

Grand Canyon River Outfitters Support Conservation Fund

Arizona River Runners is one of the fourteen licensed Grand Canyon National Park’s river outfitters that have managed the Grand Canyon Conservation Fund, a non-profit enterprise established in 1988. Each year, approximately eighty percent of all passengers on professionally outfitted Grand Canyon river trips donate $1 per day of their river trip to the Grand Canyon Conservation Fund. This money is then awarded in the form of grants to non-profit conservation groups, as well as groups working to provide outdoor experiences for those with physical and socioeconomic challenges. Organizations like the Grand Canyon Trust are working hard to protect the Canyon and its natural beauty, while other groups like River of Dreams help provide river trip scholarship assistance to the disabled. Grand Canyon Youth’s mission is to give teens an experiential education along the rivers and canyons of the Southwest while promoting environmental awareness, community involvement, personal growth, and teamwork among people with diverse backgrounds and the Peregrine Fund is committed to the reintroduction and protection of the California Condor through their efforts at their Vermillion Cliffs site in Northern Arizona.

Managed by volunteers for over 20 years, the Grand Canyon Conservation Fund makes sure that 100 percent of donations go directly to the effort of protecting and conserving the Grand Canyon and providing access to those who would otherwise not be able to share in the Grand Canyon river experience. In the past 13 years, the involved river outfitters have raised over $1,000,000 in donations which has been awarded to these and other non-profit organizations in the form of grants. A lot of care and attention goes into choosing the groups to receive these funds and each individual grant generally ranges anywhere from $5,000- $20,000.

One of the most exciting new projects that the GCCF is becoming involved in is the potential of a Grand Canyon River Heritage Museum to be located at the South Rim. Participating outfitters are currently working with the Grand Canyon Association to determine the feasibility of converting the historic laundry building, located within walking distance to the rim, into this new proposed museum which will tell the history of rafting the Grand Canyon.

All of the non-profit public interest organizations involved with the Grand Canyon Conservation Fund are working hard in an effort to continue to spread awareness, education and conservation in the Canyon. Anyone can help make a difference and all donations are fully tax deductible as charitable giving. Each person to donate as little as $1 is helping to preserve one of the world’s natural wonders and is giving people an opportunity to experience that which they might otherwise never be able to.
